How to Pick the Right Restoration Company
4/26/2022 (Permalink)
Just had a water damage in your basement and you don’t know what to do? Or had a fire that covered your entire kitchen in smoke and soot? In situations like these, your decisions will prove crucial in not only how quickly you can have everything go back to normal, but also how much will have to come out of your wallet. The most important thing to do (besides stopping the water or fire) is to call a restoration company. There are many companies to call and choose from, but not all can guarantee a great experience. As for SERVPRO of Perry Hall/White Marsh, we guarantee that we will not only give you your life back, but we will give you the best service while we do it.
Here are some reasons why SERVPRO of Perry Hall/White Marsh should be the first restoration company you call:
- Restoration is not something that just anyone can do.
It is not recommended that you hire someone who is an amateur or considers themselves a handyman, even if they claim to have experience with water damages. They will not have access to the same equipment, nor will they understand the process as much as fully trained professionals and as a result will cost you even more money in the future when you finally decide to call for professional help. Remember, microbes in water, even the cleanest water, multiply quickly – mold will grow in a matter of days if not treated soon and properly. Likewise, leaving your house covered in soot from a fire is incredibly dangerous to your health. It damages the air quality of your home, exacerbates breathing conditions, and leaves behind stains and bad odors. To get it properly cleaned, you must call professionals immediately to take care of it. SERVPRO spends thousands of dollars for equipment, training its employees, and obtaining licenses and certifications.
- SERVPRO of Perry Hall/White Marsh has access to disaster recovery specialists and “Storm Teams”.
If the area is inundated with catastrophic flooding or fires. During the Polar Vortex, we averaged at about 15 new calls per hour for 3 days, Hurricane Sandy we received 120 calls in 4 hours; this is a standard circumstance for storm situations and if you call a SERVPRO, you will automatically be put into the system and you will be seen by either us or a “Storm Team” who come to our area from other states to help with large scale disaster recovery.
- Every employee has had a background check, leaving your property and its tenants in safe hands.
Worried about strangers coming into your home to work? No worries! SERVPRO does extensive background checks into each employee to ensure that you and your property are safe and in good hands. Managers will come by your property during the work process every once in a while to supervise employees and their work. We strive to employ only trustworthy and hardworking individuals.
- SERVPRO Franchises have access to a network of specialists.
We have numerous contacts who can help you with any kind of damage in your home, such as damaged art, electronics, oriental rugs, plumbing, heating, electricians, and even reconstruction once the issue has been resolved and cleaned. When you call, feel free to ask if we can recommend you another service provider to have come to your home.
- SERVPRO of Perry/Hall White Marsh has their own climate-controlled storage space.
We have our own storage space in our facility so that your property can be stored during the restoration process. On top of that, our climate-controlled warehouse contains equipment that we are trained to use to help restore your items, including an Ultrasonic Cleaning System. We store it all in house, perform cleanings and repairs, and return it when your property is ready.

Flooding: What it Does, and What to Do, Perry Hall, MD
4/13/2022 (Permalink)
In the spring and summer months (sometimes as late as the fall), flooding is a common phenomenon to occur in the state of Maryland. In fact, the entire state minus the westernmost portions is a part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed: in other words, most of the state serves as a channel for the rainfall and snowmelt to flow through streams and rivers all the way into the Chesapeake Bay. Combined with its position next to the Atlantic Ocean, Maryland witnesses about 42 inches of precipitation on average every year.
Whether it’s a flash flood that strikes out of nowhere or the steady overflow of a river, both can be incredibly dangerous if you are not careful. While it’s common for local flooding to affect your home perhaps only via leaks or failing sump pumps, flood water is powerful enough to sweep away vehicles and even homes. Some homes are more prone to flooding than others depending on how high the property is in comparison to the surrounding area. In general, it is recommended that you check if your property is located within a flood plain. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is a useful resource for determining this, as they have a Flood Map Service that can determine which areas are more likely to be flooded.
If you ever encounter flood waters outside your home:
- Keep listening to the radio or local news stations for any developing information on the flood. This will help you learn to avoid flooded areas if you are on the road.
- Stay away from flood waters – if you come up on a flowing stream where the water is above your ankles, stop and turn around. 6 inches of water can sweep you off your feet. Tip: Find a large walking stick to use to check the ground’s firmness as you walk.
- If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooding road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car immediately and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away in less than 2 feet of water
- Keep children and pets away from the water.
After the flooding, even if the water is still, do not touch or enter the water. Flood water is heavily prone to contamination of oil, gasoline, or raw sewage. Such contaminated water is extremely harmful to one’s health. Not only that, but flood water is murky and makes it hard to see where you are putting your feet when you walk. When the water has receded and gone, then you may assess the possible damages left in its wake.
Damage can occur long after the water has gone. The remaining moisture in the area is the perfect recipe for mold growth, especially in flooded basements where walls and floors were soaked. If left untreated, mold can go on to damage the structural integrity of your home. This can cost you thousands of dollars in repairs and treatments. At the same time, do not try to clean it by yourself. Even if it seems clean and dry, you have no means of accurately assessing the area without the proper tools and experience.
If a flood strikes your home or business, contact SERVPRO of Perry Hall/White Marsh immediately! Even minor floods have the potential to cause MAJOR damage and if not treated properly, can result in mold growth.

What is ice damming and why it is prevelant in the Seven Courts neighborhood of Perry Hall Maryland
1/18/2022 (Permalink)
If your roof is covered in snow or ice, and you’re noticing water coming in from the sides of your home or business, you may be experiencing what's known as Ice Damming.
An Ice dam is ice build-up on roofs that form a blockage, preventing snow melt from draining off the roof properly. We Baltimoreans are at a high risk for ice damming related water damage due to our fluctuating weather; our warm days melt the snow, and our freezing winter nights refreeze the water, this is known as a melt-refreeze cycle.
How an Ice Dam Damages your Seven Courts Property
Heat collects in the attic and warms the roof, except at the eaves. The eaves are the edges of the roof which overhang the face of a wall and, normally, project beyond the side of a building. The eaves form an overhang to throw water clear of the walls. Then snow melts on the warm roof and then freezes on the cold eaves, followed by ice accumulation, forming a dam. Melted water from the warm roof backs up behind it, flows under the shingles, and into the house! Seven courts homes are especially at risk because of the fluctuating winter weather that winters in Baltimore county are known for.
If you notice ice damming in your seven courts home, it’s very important that you address it quickly. Once this trapped ice melt accumulates, it seeps through the shingles, and enters your home through the attic; affecting your walls, ceiling, and roof, causing walls to sag, ceilings to buckle, crumble, and can even collapse!
Chances are, if you’re reading this now you may need repair, if so, don’t wait! Call your local SERVPRO you see signs of any water coming into your home. Water damage restoration can be expensive, but it’s more expensive to wait. A water damage specialist from SERVPRO will be able to dry the structure, carpet, and hardwood, and salvage contents such as clothing and electronics but not everyone is equipped to do this (WE ARE!). If the water damage in your home is not treated within by a professional within 48-72 hours of the initial leak, it’s highly likely you will get mold, which will cause the removal process to become more hazardous, and difficult to remove as time allows the mold to grow and spread.

Parkville Homeowners, this is what you need to do when your sewer backs up into your home.
4/19/2021 (Permalink)
A sewer backing up, or contaminated water backing out of your tub, sink or toilet can be an absolute nightmare for Parkville homeowners. Sewer backups happen frequently during storms because the sewer system is overwhelmed causing it to "back-up" through your toilet or drains.
The truth is you can’t (and shouldn’t) do very much; sewage contaminated water is dangerous to your health and should be avoided at all costs. If you have water backing up out of toilet, sink or bathtub in your Nottingham home, then follow these steps and call SERVPRO of Perry Hall White Marsh
410-529-1664
Your Game Plan
- Stay out of the area/avoid cross contamination
- Determine the source
- Arrange repair and cleanup services with SERVPRO of Perry Hall/White Marsh or your local SERVPRO/Water restoration company
- Call your Insurance Company
Keep Children and Pets away from sewer-water affected areas
Keep children and pets away the moment sewer water is discovered, until the clean-up crew and sanitation is complete. Sewage is Category 3 water, more commonly known as black water. Category 3 water or Black water is defined by the IICRC as “the worst classification and is grossly unsanitary. It could cause severe illness or death if ingested” Keep children and pets away at all times and if you yourself must go in the area, wash your hands thoroughly and avoid touching cuts, eyes, mouth or ears with your hands or any item that came in contact with the black water.
Risks of Sewage back up debris
Category 3 water/Raw sewage contains diseases such as Hepatitis, Salmonella, E.Coli and Parasites just to name a few, would you risk cleaning this yourself without proper training or the tools and chemicals to do it correctly? These diseases survive weeks even months if not properly killed. Doing it yourself, or hiring the wrong professional puts you, your family, pets and house guests at a great risk. Call SERVPRO of Perry Hall/White Marsh to schedule emergency Service to have the job taken care of "Like it never even happened."
Determine whether the waste is local (as in, from your own home) or from the sewer system also known as “backflow”
IF you are able to do some inspecting, then determine the source by the amount and the flow rate. Determine the source of the sewage backup – if entering the area seems like it would be dangerous to your health (no proper protective equipment) then just skip on down to arrange services. A local waste product would be from a blockage, tree roots affecting plumbing lines or broken or collapsed lines on your property, this waste would be from your own home but is still considered a category 3. Backflow is when the sewer system in your neighborhood or municipality is overwhelmed, and it reverses in your pipes, causing it to erupt from toilets, sinks and tubs. This can happen from heavy rain-flow overwhelming your municipality’s sewer system, causing it to backflow into your home.
Arrange Services with SERVPRO of Perry Hall /White Marsh
Call an Emergency Restoration company such as SERVPRO of Perry Hall White Marsh as we are IICRC Certified and specialize in cleaning up hazardous waste. Most contractors and plumbers do not have the capability to clean up the site after the repairs have been made and may not be approved by your insurance company if you choose to claim the loss.
SERVPRO also has a 1-4-8 policy, which means
- 1 hour from notice of loss - (When you call), a SERVPRO professional will contact you to arrange services.
- 4 hours of calling - a SERVPRO professional will be onside to start mitigating services (or your earliest convenience).
- 8 business hour- a verbal briefing of the scope will be communicated to your adjuster by a SERVPRO Professional.
Why call SERVPRO? If any SERVPRO believes they are incapable of responding within this time frame, they will refer you to a different SERVPRO so you are not left waiting!
Call your insurance company
Ask your agent if this is a covered loss, and what your deductible will be. This can be done before or after calling SERVPRO of Perry Hall White Marsh as we accept all insurance plans and you can also pay yourself – whether you are covered or not.
If you are not covered, not a problem, we will begin services after a deposit has been made and the rest will be due upon completion. Please call for deposit details!

An Ice dam is ice build-up on roofs that form a blockage, preventing snow melt from draining off the roof properly. We Marylanders are at a high risk for ice damming related water damage due to our fluctuating weather; our warm days melt the snow, and our freezing winter nights refreeze the water, this is known as a melt-refreeze cycle.

- Heat collects in the attic and warms the roof, except at the eaves. The eaves are the edges of the roof which overhang the face of a wall and, normally, project beyond the side of a building. The eaves form an overhang to throw water clear of the walls
- Snow melts on the warm roof and then freezes on the cold eaves
- Ice accumulates along the eaves, forming a dam. Melted water from the warm roof backs up behind it, flows under the shingles, and into the house
This water gets trapped, seeps through the shingles and enters your home through the attic, affecting your walls, ceiling, and roof, causing walls to sag, ceilings to buckle, crumble, and even collapse.

How to use a generator safely when a winter storm strikes Nottingham, Maryland.

Never use a generator, grill, camp stove, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal burning device INSIDE a home, basement, garage, crawlspace or even partially enclosed area.
If you have a generator on hand for power outages during severe weather, follow the safety tips below (from the American Red Cross).
- To avoid electrocution, keep the generator dry and do not use in rain or wet conditions. Operate it on a dry surface under an open canopy-like structure such as under a tarp held up by poles. Do not touch the generator with wet hands.

Although Carbon monoxide can’t be smelled, it can rapidly build up and lead to full incapacitation and death. Even if you cannot smell exhaust fumes, you may still be exposed. IF you start to feel dizzy, week, sick while using a generator, get to fresh air IMMEDIATELY

3 Essential steps to preventing winter weather damage in Rosedale, Maryland.
11/25/2019 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Perry Hall/White Marsh responds to over 60 frozen pipe calls a year! Cold weather is one of the leading causes of storm damage property claims in Rosedale, Maryland. To prevent costly damage due to freezing temperatures, take the following precautions to protect your property. We recommend doing them before winter weather hits… but if its cold outside and you’re concerned, bundle up and get to work!
Protect your cars, sheds, and roofs from Trees
Check your property for downed tree limbs and branches. Weather such as heavy rain, wind, ice and snow can cause branches to fall which could cause damage to property and potentially cause personal injuries!
Clear gutters and drains
Roof, water pipes, and gutters should all be inspected to ensure they are in proper order. Gutter downspouts should be directed away from your building. Clear gutters of debris that may have gathered during the fall; leaves and other obstructions can lead to ice damming which can lead to roof damage and interior water problems.
Prevent indoor and outdoor water pipes from freezing!
Protect water pipes from freezing by simply allowing water to drip when temperatures dip below freezing. If pipes are under a cabinet, leave the cabinet doors open allowing warm air inside to circulate. If the building has outside faucet, turn the valve off, open the outdoor faucet until its completely drained!

A sewer backing up, or contaminated water backing out of your tub, sink or toilet can be an absolute nightmare for Nottingham homeowners.
Keep children and pets away the moment the sewer water is discovered, until the clean-up crew and sanitation is complete. Sewage is considered Category 3 water, more commonly known as black water.
Call SERVPRO of Perry Hall/White Marsh to schedule emergency Service to have the job taken care of like it never even happened.
Arrange Services with SERVPRO of Perry Hall White Marsh

Three safety tips to follow while using your residential generator in Rossville Maryland
4/25/2018 (Permalink)
If you have a generator on hand for power outages during severe weather, follow the safety tips below (from the American Red Cross). Never use a generator, grill, camp stove, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal burning device INSIDE a home, basement, garage, crawlspace or even partially enclosed area.
- To avoid electrocution, keep the generator dry and do not use in rain or wet conditions. Operate it on a dry surface under an open canopy-like structure such as under a tarp held up by poles. Do not touch the generator with wet hands.
- Opening doors and windows or fans will not prevent Carbon monoxide build up in the home.
- Install Carbon monoxide alarms in central locations on every level of your home or property and outside of sleeping areas to provide early warning of accumulating carbon monoxide.

Tips on preventing frozen pipes in your Kingsville Maryland home before you go out of town
2/21/2018 (Permalink)
Tips on preventing frozen pipes in your Kingsville Maryland home before you go out of town
Preventing frozen pipes is essential to preventing severe water damage. Broken water pipes rank second only to hurricanes in terms of both frequency and severity in regards to annual claims resulting from water damage. If we had a nickel for every Kingsville Maryland homeowner who came back to town to a water damaged home, we wouldn’t need to work ever again. We’re going to give you tips on how to prevent frozen pipe related water damage the next time you leave town in the winter.
- Set the thermostat in your house no lower than 65°F, (some people say 55, we think 65 is a safer)
- Ask a friend or neighbor to check your house daily to make sure the heat is working, and that there are no other appliance malfunctions – 250 gallons of water that can leak from a 1/8-inch pipe crack in a day.
- Leave your kitchen cabinet doors open while you are gone to allow warm air to circulate pipes
- If you’re going to be away for a long time – such as a month or so, shut off and drain the water system. Be aware that if you have a fire protection sprinkler system in your house, it may be deactivated when you shut off the water.
- Leave your kitchen cabinet doors open while you are gone to allow warm air to circulate pipes
If your pipes do freeze
What if your pipes still freeze, despite your best preventive measures? First step: Don't panic. Just because they're frozen doesn't mean they've already burst. Here's what you can do:
- If you turn on your faucets and nothing comes out, leave the faucets turned on and call a plumber.
- If there is standing water, call SERVPRO and then a plumber. Do not enter the area or use electrical appliances in areas of standing water. You could be electrocuted.
- Never attempt to thaw a pipe with a torch or other open flame because it could cause a fire hazard. But you may be able to use a hairdryer. Start by warming the pipe as close to the faucet as possible, working toward the coldest section of pipe.
- If your water pipes have already burst, turn off the water at the main shutoff your family knows where the water shutoff valve is and how to open and close it. SERVPRO has water and gas shut off valve tags. If you need some please ask your local SERVPRO.

How Ice Dams Damage your White Marsh Home
1/16/2018 (Permalink)
An Ice dam is ice build-up on roofs that form a blockage, preventing snow melt from draining off the roof properly. We Marylanders are at a high risk for ice damming related water damage due to our fluctuating weather; our warm days melt the snow, and our freezing winter nights refreeze the water, this is known as a melt-refreeze cycle.
How an Ice Dam Damages your White Marsh Property
You should call your local SERVPRO you see signs of any water coming into your home. Water damage restoration can be expensive, but it’s more expensive to wait. A water damage specialist will be able to dry the structure, carpet, and hardwood, and salvage contents such as clothing and electronics but not everyone is equipped to do this (WE ARE!). If the water damage in your home is not treated within by a professional within 48-72 hours of the initial leak, it’s highly likely you will get mold, which will cause the removal process to become more hazardous, and difficult to remove as time allows the mold to grow and spread.

First Inspection when you return home after a hurricane hits.
12/4/2017 (Permalink)
Returning home to your home after a hurricane or flood: Before returning
- Find out if it is safe to enter your community or neighborhood.
- Follow the advice of your local authorities.
- Carry plenty of cash. ATMs may not work and stores may not be able to accept credit or debit cards.
- Bring supplies such as flashlights, batteries, bottled water and nonperishable foods in case utilities are out.
- Create back-up communication plans with family and friends in case you are unable to call from affected areas.
- Plan for delays when traveling. Bring extra food, water, pillows, blankets and other items that will make the trip more comfortable.
- Keep the fuel tank of your vehicle as full as possible in case gas stations are crowded, out of fuel or closed.
- Carry a map to help you route around heavy traffic or impassable roads.
- Find out if local medical facilities are open and if emergency services are functioning again. Do NOT call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number to do this.
- Understand that recovery takes time. Focus on the positive and have patience. Others will have similar frustrations.
First inspection of home after a hurricane
- If possible, leave children and pets with a relative or friend. If not, keep them away from hazards and floodwater.
- Beware of rodents, snakes, insects and other animals that may be on your property or in your home.
- Before entering your home, look outside for damaged power lines, gas lines, foundation cracks and other exterior damage. It may be too dangerous to enter the home.
- Smell for gas. If you smell natural gas or propane, or hear a hissing noise, leave immediately and contact the fire department.
- If your home was flooded, assume it is contaminated with mold. Mold increases health risks for those with asthma, allergies or other breathing conditions.
- Open doors and windows. Let the house air out before staying inside for any length of time if the house was closed for more than 48 hours.
- Turn the main electrical power and water systems off until you or a professional can ensure that they are safe. NEVER turn the power on or off, or use an electrical tool or appliance while standing in water.

Hurricanes and tropical storms what they are and common terminology
9/4/2017 (Permalink)
Hurricanes are strong storms that cause life-and-property threatening hazards such as flooding, storm surge, high wind and tornadoes. Preparation is the best protection against the dangers of a hurricane so it's important to know the difference between a hurricane, tropical storm, hurricane watch, and hurricane warning.
Hurricane and tropical Storm
Tropical Storm: a localized, very intense low-pressure wind system, forming over tropical oceans and with winds of hurricane force. All hurricanes are tropical storms, but not all tropical storms are Hurricanes.
Hurricane: a violent, tropical, cyclonic storm of the western North Atlantic, having wind speeds of or in excess of 72 miles per hour (32 m/sec). The term for hurricane on the west coast of the united states is called a typhoon.
Hurricane: Watch Vs. Warning
Hurricane watch: Conditions are a threat within the 48 hours.

4 ways to winterize your Parkville MD home
1/24/2017 (Permalink)
Cold weather is one of the leading causes of storm damage property claims. To prevent costly damage due to weather take the following precautions to protect your property - its best to do them before winter weather hits but if its cold outside and your concerned, bundle up and get to work!
1. check your property for downed tree limbs and branches. weather such as heavy rain, wind, ice and snow can cause branches to fall which could cause damage to property and potentially cause personal injuries.
2. Inspect roof, water pipes, and gutters should all be inspected to ensure they are in proper order. Gutter downspouts should be directed away from your building. Clear gutters of debris that may have gathered during the fall. leaves and other obstructions can lead to ice damming which can lead to roof damage and interior water problems.
3. Make sure walkways, parking lots have proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential
4. Protect water pipes from freezing by simply allowing water to drip when temperatures dip below freezing. If pipes are under a cabinet, leave the cabinet doors open allowing warm air inside to circulate. If the building has outside faucet to ensure it drains preventing any remaining water from freezing in the pipe. Once the valve is off, open the outdoor faucet to ensure it drains, preventing any remaining water freezing in the pipe.
8 Things to do before a Severe Storm arrives in White Marsh, Maryland
8/16/2016 (Permalink)
Call SERVPRO of Perry Hall White Marsh if you experience Water Damage or storm damage and we will make it "Like it never even happened." 410-529-1664
The Baltimore Metro area is known for its whacky weather. and while some might not believe it, White Marsh has experienced tornado, flood, wind and hail damage in recent years. Here are some tips we recommend to keep yourself safe during a storm
1. build an emergency kit and a communication plan
2. remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm
3. postpone outdoor activities
4. Go indoors if you hear thunder shortly after hearing lightning, remember the 30/30 rule. Go indoors if you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder
5. Secure objects that could blow away or cause damage (trash cans, toys)
6. Remember, rubber soled shoes and rubber tires provide no protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.
7. Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.
8. Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives

Ice Dams: Why your Kingsville home is leaking after a heavy snowstorm
2/1/2016 (Permalink)
3 Ways Ice Dams Damages Propety: If your home experiences water damage from Ice dams give SERVPRO of Perry Hall White Marsh a call 410-529-1664
This water gets trapped, seeps through the shingles and enters your home through the attic, affecting your walls, ceiling, and roof, causing walls to sag, ceilings to buckle, crumble, and even collapse.
You should call your preferred water damage restoration company if you see signs of any water coming into your home.
