Pet Fire safety and fire prevention for Cowenton MD

10/9/2017 (Permalink)

Pets: you may not think of them as fire starters but accidents happen and we are sharing this list from the American Red Cross which gives some tips on how to prevent these accidents from happening.

  1. Extinguish open flames: pets are generally curious and will investigate cooking appliances, candles or even a fire in your fireplace. Ensure your pet is not left unattended around an open flame and make sure to thoroughly extinguish any open flame before leaving home
  2. Remove stove knobs or protect them with covers- stove cook tops are the number one piece of equipment involved in pets starting fires (they jump up and put their paws on the knobs)
  3. Invest in flameless candles – these candles contain a light bulb rather than an open flame, and take the danger out of your pet knocking over a candle. Cats are notorious for starting fires when their tails turn over lit candles
  4. Secure young pets away from fire starting hazards when you aren’t home using crates or baby gates.
